Gold Star Moms of Alaska - "Freedom Is NOT Free"!!!
New Beginnings...

1Peter 3:15 " But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear"...

It's March 2001' and we are making our final move to our "piece of Alaskan paradise" on 80.5 of the Glenn Hwy. in Chickaloon. Our property drops 60ft. off the hwy. so making some sort of access was our 1st priority. While we worked day after day clearing a trail to the bottom of the hill, we had to park our trucks at the pull off near the state road sign just above the trail.
Now manuvering our belongings, as well as all the building supplies we needed for our cabin, down this steep hill, was accomplished much easier. After reaching the bottom, we then loaded our lumber etc... onto a large supply wagon, which we then pulled back to our new building site on the bluff. There was only a small amount of snow left in the woods, so we were able to get it packed down quickly. As time wore on though, the rising tempratures, REALLY made for a muddy mess. But with everyone working together, we were able to get quite a bit done each day.
An absolutely awesome location was chosen for our home site. The "view" is the main reason we bought this property. Clearing  the trail down from the hwy. was only the beginning of our endeavors. Our property has a large number of trees. There are 5 main trees...cottonwood, birch, aspen, willow and black spruce. The "underbrush" is extremely dense. This consists of wildrose, highbush cranberry, fireweed, soapberries, and star flowers. A perfect place for a moose to raise her calves, and a bear to hide! We are very watchful!
Our next order of business, after getting the building supplies hauled back to the site, was to get a structure built that ALL 14 of us could live in temporarily, until a bigger cabin could be constructed. We put up three different tents. Two for the older boys, and another for all our belongings. The post holes that were needed for this "greenhouse" structure, which was a 10 by 12 ft. area, needed to be cleared of snow, and then 6 holes, 3ft. deep were dug. At this point in our building plan, it would make do for a roof over our heads. But as soon as we could get the "main cabin" liveable, we would use the "greenhouse" for storage of all our supplies. Then eventually,  we could use the "greenhouse" as it was intended!

Still under construction...
